CoffeeShopReader's Reviews:

“I” is for “Insomniacs”

Insomniacs After School vol. 1 by Makoto Ojiro

August 20, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 7: “I” is for “Insomniacs” Title: “Insomniacs After School”; relevance to the “I” square self-explanatory. I was kind of surprised how much I liked this for it being a high school slice of life kind of thing. Basic plot is two students with legit sleep issues (for very different reasons – one seemingly medical, the other potentially emotional) bond over finding a good nap spot in the abandoned astronomy observatory at their school.  Then it turns into a school club story when a teacher […]

Cats Being Cats

Cat + Gamer vol. 4 by Wataru Nadatani

August 20, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo6  : Play This one is kind of literal. Cat + Gamer is a manga about a gamer geek girl who gets a cat. Riko (human) describes her cat in gamer terms, and when she gets a new kitty to keep Musubi (kitty1) company, she frames it as a game quest. We get to see Riko playing her games a bit, but also Soboro (kitty 2) and Musubi learning to play with each other. I don’t even think I missed too much by jumping in […]

This game is not as fun as the original

The Game is Murder by Hazell Ward

August 6, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 5: G square (first noun of the title is “Game”) Clue the concept and experience is best executed first by the movie (all hail Tim Curry), second by the board game, and very distant thirdly by the novel The Game is Murder. The story takes a family tragedy in 1920s England (the age of the Great Detective) that the family feels is not satisfactorily solved. Lord John Verreman is accused of murdering the nanny having mistaken her for his wife (they had a rocky […]

Enter the Multiverse but Staying Cozy, at least for now

Chilling Reflections by Drew Hayes

August 3, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 4: Favorite Drew Hayes in one of my favorite contemporary authors. He’s got the right level of geek, trope, and fun, while still managing to stay interesting. Chilling Reflections is book 3 in the Villain’s Code series, and while there have been signs in previous volumes, this one makes it pretty clear that this series is tilting into a Marvel-style multi-verse area. One thing that definitely surprised me is how directly the side story series (Villains Vignettes 1) is involved. I’ve read that, and […]

Cozy romantasy in which game night is the wildest part

Tea You at the Altar by Rebecca Thorne

August 3, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 3: TBR I recently saw book four in the tetralogy at an airport bookstore, and realized that I still had book 3 on my TBR shelf (literally, physical book on actual shelf). Tea You at the Altar is book 3 of the Tomes and Tea series, and like the two previous volumes is a cozy romantasy. Kind of fitting actually, since I’m pretty sure I picked up book 1 in an airport as well. This time, the story is less about the tea and […]

I might be too old for this

The Unofficial TikTok Cookbook by Valnetina Mussi

August 3, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 2: Arts square The Unofficial TikTok Cookbook as you might suspect is as much about making things look pretty/interesting as it is about making tasty edibles, thus art.  Full disclosure: I’m not on TikTok. I don’t care enough or really have the time to go down that path.  I do appreciate that the book starts with a discussion of what makes something go viral and gets into some of the logistics of being a successful content creator, and features comments throughout on how to […]
