Murder and a Fulfilling Retirement

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

December 30, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Thursday Murder Club has been on my radar off and on for a while; finally, another Cannonballer’s review of a sequel reminded me and coincided with a random bookstore coupon (in-store only), so I went shopping. This is probably what Only Murders in the Building must be like in book form; I don’t have the streaming service required, but I’m not too sad about that anymore. Basically, the premise is a group of residents of a retirement home in rural-ish England get together to […]

Mid-trilogy shift from Snarky Magical Adventure to a Demon Endless Philosophy

Quicksilver Court by Melissa Caruso

December 17, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Quicksilver Court is an interesting middle installment; there’s a lot of set up for future things and not much is resolved. What’s interesting is that a key question from the first book is answered about halfway through; usually you have to wait until book 3 for that. What happens here though is that that reveal sets up both a good bit of probably character development (or at least soul searching) as well as the final major plot conflict. Ryx, Severin, and the rest of the […]

esmemoria nailed it! All stuff I have wanted to read or didn’t know I wanted! Not sure what the slug thing is but it fits right in, and I do enjoy little toys like that.

Hopefully it’s just series sophmore slump

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

November 24, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Potentially unpopular opinion ahead: I did not especially like Harrow the Ninth. I loved Gideon the Ninth, but I don’t think all the narrative experimenting and the pacing worked out well here. After Harrow becomes a Lyctor and Gideon is gone, about 85 percent of the Harrow the Ninth is confusion. The narrative switches between second and third person (there’s also some first person but that is mostly later) and neither voice really knows what’s going on; on the one hand, this makes sense because […]

Hair Power

Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries

November 24, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Witchy fells kind of familiar; there’s the adolescent with a secret who doesn’t quite fit into their magical world (Nyneve), the kind friend, the former antagonist turned maybe ally (or not) Prill, the seemingly grandfatherly leader of the magical world, the spooky granny figure who provides information and advice, etc. The concept of the magic system is interesting (power usually tied to hair length; more hair suggests stronger power, but too much hair, and the magical police come to execute you (witch burning)) and the […]

The Great British Baking Show Favorite Flavors by Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, 2022 bakers

November 24, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So the Great British Bake Off aka Great British Baking Show books have been kind of hit or miss; more miss lately, but thankfully, in spite of some unfortunate decisions during the actual series, the book is back to what it should be: cool bakes that are actually achievable and useful to an average home baker. The Great British Baking Show: Favorite Flavors has a lot of things I think I both can and actually want to try. Before I get into the good stuff, […]
