Ninth House

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

March 21, 2022 by 1000Oysters Leave a Comment

Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo Ninth House is the first “adult” novel by Leigh Bardugo. Bardugo’s writing retains the flavor of the young adult novels she is most well-known for and other than the slightly older protagonist, I’m not sure what defines Ninth House as an “adult” novel. This is in no way a criticism – I very much enjoyed her other books and I enjoyed Ninth House. The shift seemed to be highlighted by the publisher but I’m guessing more as […]

I don’t want any of it

All This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg

March 21, 2022 by 1000Oysters Leave a Comment

All This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg is the story of the Tuchman family, told over one hot New Orleans day, while the patriarch, Victor, lies unconscious in a hospital bed. I finished this book weeks ago and have not been able to write a review. It isn’t that I didn’t like this book but it’s also not that I did like this book. Attenberg is a talented writer and All This Could Be Yours is a competently written book. It’s more… well, years […]

Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon

March 14, 2022 by 1000Oysters Leave a Comment

Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone is the ninth book in the main Outlander storyline – the action picks up pretty much immediately where the previous book left off, with the MacKenzies return to the Ridge. I’ve been stuck on what to say about this book – it’s not as if anyone is going to pick it up and not read it after investing the time for the first eight. Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone is exactly what an Outlander […]

The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design by Roman Mars and Kurt Kohlstedt

February 6, 2022 by 1000Oysters 1 Comment

Reading has been my self-care since I was a little girl. Sometime in March 2020, that self-care lost much of its effectiveness. I still read but my ability to retain much of what I read, or enjoy it, faded. I fell into re-reading my old favorites. I also found many of my usual podcast escapes stressed me out. So I began to look for something that reminded me that people weren’t, in fact, the worst. Enter 99% Invisible, the podcast. I burned through episodes while […]

Movie Star by Lizzie Pepper by HIlary Liftin

February 6, 2022 by 1000Oysters Leave a Comment

Confession, I enjoy celebrity gossip.  Back in the summer of 2012, I was visiting a friend when the news broke about Katie Holmes leaving Tom Cruise. It was such a shocking story at the time and the few details the were publicly available sounded like something out of a spy novel. Movie Star by Lizzie Pepper by Hilary Liftin is a thinly veiled speculative version of the TomKat split. Liftin has a past career of celebrity ghostwriting, which gave certain aspects of her story some […]

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin is the story of four siblings, Varya, Daniel, Klara and Simon Gold. On a hot summer day in 1969, the four pay a visit to a woman who can tell them when they will die. Each sibling must come to terms with the knowledge in their own way and each faces the question of whether that knowledge informs the way they live. Complicating each of their lives is their relationships to each other and their parents, Gertie and Saul. Those […]
