Music and Silence: The Passion and Protest of Pablo Casals is just a WOW book. It is beautifully written, beautifully illustrated and beautifully presented. Christy Mihaly and illustrator Mariona Cabassa made this (due mid/later April 2026) book about a person and story I do not think I had ever heard of before. It is more emotional than an action story, but there are events that have the action, too. We see how the power of music can try and topple governments. We see how one person can make an impact in the loudest, biggest way possible: by using silence.
You just need to let yourself flow with the text and colorfully, slightly fantastical images. Things are colorful, deep, and while not “too dark” they deal with serious images and subjects. There are a few images that can be mature (they are about war) but not gratuitous. Just know your reader, which probably should be at least five and up as well.
Due to the fact that Music and Silence was read via an online reader, I am not sure of the final format. However, I am assuming that it will be in a traditional picture book size that might turn off the older readers. Yet, up to third or even younger fourth grade could benefit from reading it or having it read to you in a classroom setting. It allows history and current events to combine as we learn about wars (World War and Spanish Civil War) and refugees as well as how one person had not just a passion for music, but for his home and people as well.
