A few months ago, my Silver Sprocket subscription selections mostly hit the mark. One that was really good was the Witch Hazel series by Colton Fox and Beige Blum. The one I read was a stand alone, but also a continuation of three others. The first aptly named, Witch Hazel, the second Witch Hazel Trouble at TCAF (or One Shot, I’ve seen both) and the third Witch Hazel: Seasons of the Witch. (Or that is the second and TCAF is the third … I am not sure, I read them out of order).
And that was despite the fact that I had ordered all three at once, they just got shuffled, as they were smaller than that first book. They are more comic book sized and feeling. They fit the stereotypical look and presentation of a dime store magazine/comic book. And the story is good. Now, I can’t say BEST BOOKS EVER (they are not) but they are in the top 10 of my favorite light, slightly adult to adult, easy beach reads. The stories are simple as we follow Hazel and her misadventures. She is a young, drop-out witch who learns by the school of hardknocks (if she learns….she seems to make a few similar mistakes along the way). She hires out as a witch to help humans and magical creatures so she can pay the rent. Her two best friends are her roommates, the three of them deal with trouble, mischief and love issues. Overall, things are pretty normal. Nothing is too much of a surprise (okay, so there are some spooky hand-like things coming out of the ground, but so what? Hazel has a date to get too).
Overall things are just fun. There is nothing in-depth or hard to focus on. It’s light without being pure fluff. I can’t stress enough that I really really like these three books, I recommend finding them on Silver Sprocket or at a local comic shop, and am looking forward to finding more of Hazel and gang.
