Picture books have become one of my favorite reading choices. I like the details and yet they can (sometimes) be no more than 40-50 pages. I get the satisfaction of reading and finishing a book usually in one sitting. And I also might learn something new if it is a historical or factual book. And The Lonely Lighthouse: The Story of Little Sable Point Lighthouse by Stephanie Owen covers all the bases.
Due in mid April 2026 (read via an online reader copy), this is a sweet story about a lighthouse that does not go “too deep” into the story, but enough to whet your appetite for what a lighthouse did during its heyday. We see how the lighthouse keepers came and went; how they kept the lighthouse clean of sand, how the light shone and even how the lighthouse sometimes was unable to help due to a storm being too harsh for the ships. These pieces are based on the actual lighthouse of Little Sable Point. The story is told from the perspective of a lighthouse, so it is soft and yet commanding, too. Things can be a little busy in the text, but take your time with it. This includes taking the time to view the illustrations by Sona Avedikian. These have a look and feeling of being old school images that have a modern touch. This allows it to add to the sentimental overtone but keep the reader of today’s attention. Extra are included to give the true events in relation to the fantasy elements of a lighthouse telling its own story.
Overall, things are nice, cozy, and comfortable. While most ages could be adapted to the book, mostly it is for the older reader. Adults can enjoy it as well, especially if you are a fan of lighthouses or are just curious about learning a few facts.
