Infinity and Me by Kate Hosford has been on my TBR list for so long I forgot it was even on it. Therefore when I had the opportunity to read it, it was like I had never known it was there. It was a mystery of why I had a copy. But once I read I realized that it was not just because of the interesting illustrations by Gabi Swiatkowska or the text of Hosford. It was because of how the two combined to create art. If you are looking for a scientific explanation, then this is not it. This is a more poetic take on the concept of infinity as it can be a concept we cannot really know.
The main character, Uma, is a young girl who learns of infinity and then asks various people what it means. Of course, the answers are varied as each person has their own interpretation of things as they each have different needs, hopes, wants and desires that infinity can fulfill. The idea of feeling small or large compared to infinity is done in an accessible manner for most ages and even adults.
The artwork has a mixture of a classical, old-school/old time look to it, but also feels modern. It might not be the story that makes this book but the final result. It is after you have read it that you truly understand it. The experience of this book is what makes the book. Yes, there are the pieces, but it is the end result that is the book. Yes, this is a lyrical work and that is what I felt after reading it, that whimsy and rhythm and music to the words, art and experience.
