Recently I noticed that I have been reading a lot of titles that are similar to each other, be it the theme or the way it is presented. Therefore, I was hoping to find a few new themes or at least new ways of presenting them. In I Am a Bon Dancer, by Brandi-Ann Uyemura and Amy Matsushita-Beal (the lovely illustrations creator) the dance itself is a new way of presenting an old theme, but the idea of family and trying your best has been done before. Our main character has fears about not being able to do the dance, upset she makes mistakes, embarrassed at how others are perfect and must be judging her. Of course her grandfather tells her the meaning behind the dance and how it brings them closer together with the ones who are no longer there (especially her grandmother).
This is cozy and nice. The illustrations mirror that with brightly colored images, but not overly assaulting the senses. We experience the culture and see how the crowd is diversely represented as people come from around the world to participate. There are several extras that make the story have a cultural element that ties things together and brings new information to the table. It is a culture book that represents Japanese people, but makes a universe theme available, too.
I read via an online reader copy as it is that time of year again, where the Spring 2026 books are being promoted. In mid-March 2026 you can enjoy this book in a physical format in your own (or child’s) hands.
