Miss Vicky might tell us Down with Lime Books! But what she does not realize is that the kids like lime books, and pink and purple, and blue, and yellow and read…. I mean red. Yes they love to read them all. Of course, this humorous look at book banning is silly and a bit tongue in cheek, but Down with Lime Books!: A Story about Book Banning by Jan Zauzmer and Blanca Millán is about a serious subject
As mentioned, the character Miss Vicky is gaining the support of the town to ban the lime-colored hue books. And of course, the students (and principal, and teachers) are having none of it. The rhyming text and super boldly colored images keep things moving, yet they are simple. The concept of not allowing one type of book is done in a way that is understandable to the younger (ages five and up) reader. And the words of Icky Vicky does let the adult know that the author is not fooling around and lets you know what they really think about this character and people like her.
Overall, it is not a WOW this is going to be a CLASSIC BOOK for the ages! But it is a very important book for current events. And since the book Ban This Book by Alan Gratz was on challenged and banned lists, I would be most disappointed to not see Down With Lime Books! on a list or two since they are letting the Miss Vicky’s of the world how icky sicky yucky we think they are!
