I have a subscription to Silver Sprocket books. I need to pause and/or cancel as I have so many books from them and I just cannot keep up! But I did get a chance to read Witch Hazel: Variety Hour by Colton Fox and Beige Blum.
When I opened the package, stickers and a few postcard items fell out. There was a Witch Hazel poster and another book. I was amused at the fact that the book was in a comic book style, but was more glossy and a bit more sturdy. It was a book, yet it was not exactly what you would expect for a “book-book.”
While it was late, and I wanted to get ready for bed, I would sit down and start reading. After about 50 pages, it was done. I had read some mature content and concepts for at least ages 14 and up. Things are in a fun comic like setting that has all the fun of comics and graphic novels without the ads or unnecessary “other stuff” that I remember from the old comics I would get from tag sales and flea markets (Casper and a non-Wendy witch stand out in my memory). It also didn’t smell old and musty (which does have its merits).
It is not for everyone but it is a zine for the right reader. Some stories are stand-alone, while others will back you up to a previous one, so you can find something that you like (there are even some puzzles and a coupon). There are a few other titles that I wasn’t able to locate through an independent bookstore, but could via Silver Sprockets website. And not only do they say, but I say that you can read these collections out of order, but I’m sure you’ll want them all.
