The Search for Gluscap (Adventures of the Pugulatmu’j) is volume two in the series. They are both written by Brandon Mitchell, Kielamel Sibal (letterer), and Veronika Barinova (illustrator). This book assumes you have read the first volume (Giju’s Gift), so I do recommend reading it first. But I have not read book one, but I am curious how the characters are introduced as we have a Native girl and a spiritual being that will guide us along who we are already supposed to know the backgrounds of.
This is a nice story in graphic novel format that allows us to see ways of helping the land. We learn about conservation, history and legends. We meet the spirits that shaped and protect the world. We see how the characters are like us and therefore, we do not need magical creatures to help, we are strong on our own. Mostly the images are large, bold, and colorful. They are simple, but not overly simplistic as there are plenty of details to them. However, it does make things look fairly young and while you could have a reader up to a younger fourth grade (from a solo reader aged 8 and up, or read to at least 5 and up), it might turn off the older readers.
Granted, I was not “wowed” by this book, but I enjoyed reading it enough so I do want to go back and read book one, and perhaps read future volumes as well, but that won’t be for awhile as book two is not due until May 2026. I read via an online reader copy.
