Like the title says, an archive, a family one, loaded into boxes and carried across country from New York to Arizona. The family is a hybrid one – the husband with his son and the wife with her daughter, yet the two children are a team. Good thing they have each other to rely on. The parents met as part of a project to document the soundscape of New York City, but when the wife meets the mother of a classmate of her daughter, she agrees to help her with the wo older daughters, who have been detained by immigration officials in Texas. And thus the family sets off, recording everything along the way. You might to keep in mind that this was book was written in 2019. So much has changed since then.
And as they left, the parents packed up several boxes, which are opened time from time, during this meandering road trip, each containing such ephemera such as notebooks, actual books, CDs, photos, and musical scores. They are a product of the parents’ thinking, but the two children quickly settle in to a different mindset. For them, the journey is endless but the older boy is trying to make sense of it, however he can only admire the younger girl, self-named Memphis, about five years old, who is fearless. They are inventing their own mythology and journey, and at some point split off from their parents to follow it. (Must admit I was getting really bad vibes about here, but not to worry.)
A road trip like no other.
