I Am the Mountain by Steven Weinberg is a fun and cute illustration that paints the seasons as seen by a mountain. While good for most ages, this book is broken into four “chapters” (each season) that might be best for an adult lover of art, nature or unique picture books. It might seem easy at first glance, but there are layers and it can be deeper than you would think.
Read via an online reader copy but I think I might find a finished copy, but I have until June 2026 to decide. Yes, it is going to be available in Summer 2026 and I am talking about it now. That is how good the book is. While I was not saying this was a 5, it is a very solid 4. There is a lot to see and read. There is much to think about and to ponder.
You can judge the book by its cover. It has that poetic, artistic look to it. It uses both light and dark colors, shadows and even open spaces to support the story. Things are both realistic and a bit abstract done in watercolors. The best way to describe everything is to say it is both clever and complicated, but with a simplicity that makes it accessible. You are not just learning about a mountain, or the seasons, but overall nature and how we are a part of it. This shown by the mountain letting you know what senses you should use to help you enjoy and appreciate the setting.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to everyone, but since it is a bit dense in places, know your reader.
