Everyone has their comfort entertainments and one of mine is the television show Ghosts. It started with the BBC version which aired 2019-2023 and I think I’ve watched it at least annually since I discovered it in the early part of COVID lockdowns. Ghosts: The Button House Archives is the kind of series companion book that is fan-service, but in an enjoyable “a fun bit of extra content that deepens some of the jokes and visual gags of the show while sneaking in some additional character beats” kind of way. I am the sort of fan who wants to spend a little extra time splashing around in the story world of her favorite entertainments, and this book is built to scratch that itch.
One of the things I like best about the show (which translates to its American version) is that it is truly an ensemble and I think part of that comes from the fact that its creation is from a team, one that appears in front of the camera as well. That same team put together this book and includes Mathew Baynton (Thomas), Simon Farnaby (Julian), Martha Howe-Douglas (Fanny), Jim Howick (Pat), Laurence Rickard (Robin/Sir Humphrey), and Ben Willbond (the Captain). So, even though I probably won’t revisit this volume often, I don’t feel terrible about having spent money on it because the literal show creators, writers, and a decent portion of the cast are the people who put together the articles, diaries, interviews, and all the other ephemera gathered up to share with fans.
