Read as part of CBR17 bingo: diaspora. The story follows a woman born-and-raised in Georgia who goes to Ireland for the duration of the book to investigate her sister’s death. It also has a plot of an alien race who is living on earth in diaspora.
I’ve been watching a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I found this one on a subreddit recommending books like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Make no mistake, the author has definitely seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer more than once. She may even owe Joss Whedon royalties.
But this is still a very fun book.
It’s definitely an in-between kind of read in a sense that it’s a notch above young adult due to adult themes but still very much has a young adult vibe. Fortunately, it came out before the post-Twilight young adult boom so it stands on its own as an entertaining grown up tale not afraid to get down-and-dirty with its message.
The romance angle was whatever but I did like the world Karen Marie Moning created about the mysterious fae and who they were. There’s just enough worldbuilding to tantalize without teasing and while this is a clear set up for a long-running series, I still found myself enjoying it, cringe and all.
I have the next two books, though I’m kind of disappointed I found them in the romance section. This one is nominally romance; I would have classified it as fantasy. It leads me to believe future tales will lean heavy into romance, much to my regret. We’ll start with book two and see where things go.
