Tara O’Connor has four authored and illustrated titles to her name, plus several others she is the illustrator of. Cry Out Loud is one of those titles she is the complete creator. I have read three of her works (the fourth is being searched for…). Each one is a little different from the others, yet they all have a similar tone. However, one of the interesting things is that I would say each book is for a different audience. Their memoir Roots, is for the adults (though at least 14 and up would be fine), their young adult graphic novel is Fly by Night, and Cry Out Loud is for at least 10 and up.
I read this spooky fun and danger mix to make a heart thumping story about mortality and facing the unknown via an online reader copy. I probably will not get a finished copy as out of the three I have read, this was the third favorite. I don’t see myself reading more about dysfunctional family, time travel and ritual sacrifices. Yes, sacrifices. And I said this was for as young as 10? Yup. You see they talk about it, and we (spoiler) see the ghosts of victims but overall it is relatively mild. If I was watching a movie of this I would be more “nervous” for the potential victim, as you would see peoples faces, there would be music, if anything it seemed like everyone was standing around just chit chatting. The robes are the only real clue things are not a Sunday picnic.
We also have a same-sex romance (tastefully handled as the mother of one woman mentions she is not a fan of the other woman, but is never hurtful about it). Then there is also the mental abuse our main character deals with from her mother. Again, not overly graphic or gratuitous, but it is the most intense part of things as we must deal with the fact (spoiler) at the end Nell (our main character) remembers the original past but everyone else only knows the new past/current present. (spoiler) (If you haven’t guessed, nothing happens to Nell, just she and a few friends and family change the past.)
