When I saw Covenant advertised I was not sure if I wanted to read it. One, it was a graphic novel and I’ll read almost anything when it comes to those. But two, it was a fantasy and I’m so-so when it comes to that. Three, it was about religion and I am not usually in the mood for that (unless I am). And four, it was LGBTQ, and for the longest time I was not in the mood for a LGBTQ and religion book. Then one day I said why not and got a copy from the library.
When I started Covenant Volume One, by LySandra Vuong I was thinking that if I didn’t like it I could stop. But there was something about it. Things do grab you and keep you moving, but due to the cliffhanger ending, things feel slow moving. For the first time I think I understand the term “slow burn” and not just for the romance elements. Things were so slow that I wanted to smack someone to get them moving! Mostly because I was nosey and wanted to know what was going on! Vuong you are just moving too slow for me! Let’s find out if the Bishop is the bad guy (or at least working for) and why if they are so holy is one nun wearing the mask? And OH BABY! We get to see Azriel? Gimme some page time! I’m excited mostly because I like the name (it was the name of a favorite villain cat growing up) and their priests have glowing eyes! While based in Christian ideals, things are more “spiritual” and not “in your face” (so far) but are there. Best for at least ages 14 and up.
The artwork is good, things are interesting, but also mature. There is some blood, death, and really sharp demon teeth. There is a bit of subtle humor to the overall tone, a bit tongue in cheek, but also of course, a seriousness. Things are glossy and typical comic-graphic novel looking. Overall, it is not for everyone, but everyone might find something to enjoy. And while this was not a BEST book ever, I have requested book two, waiting until I can request volume three, four is due in December 2025 with five coming Spring 2026.
