Trigger warning: Rape
This is going to be my last book in this series. I got interested in the character of Mercy Kilpatrick since she popped up in a Bree Taggert book. But this was just all over the place. I didn’t like the plot following these preppers who often in real life are racist as anything. I think Elliot skipped that whole thing purposefully because I think she thought she was doing something with hey preppers got good points about making sure they grow their own food cause eventually the world will end and where will we be. FYI, I heard the Rapture is happening tomorrow, make of that what you will.
Also there’s a whole murder that sets this whole thing off but it takes ages to get to and I still didn’t even fully understand it outside of [redacted] being a rapist. I just got nothing when you have the whole premise of this book being Kilpatrick’s family being about family and community. It just boggled my mind.
I also didn’t buy the romance aspect between Mercy and Truman. It just happens and there’s no build-up to even why they even liked each other outside of Eliot writing it that way. I liked the fact that Bree and Matt (in the Bree Taggert series) took a bit to even get there understandably.
I read this for Halloween Bingo “Free/Raven square.”
