“When You Are Mine” is the first book in a series I have zero intention of finishing. It starts with a wedding and the best man, Walsh, is doing a wedding toast for his best friend Cam. One problem, Walsh is in love with his best friend’s wife, Kerris.
Child no. I got recommended this book again (by someone at the only romance book store in NoVa) and I swear to God those people hate me. WHY???? This book had me mad from the word go. I bought it months ago and had to put it down since it irked the crap out of my soul so much. I loathed ton of the themes that were explored in this book (no spoilers).
But the over the top freaking plot points (someone gets kidnapped) and the conversation around colorism had me grinding my damn teeth.
I hated Kerris. Seriously. I thought her whole thing just showed someone not having the sense God gave a gnat. Her being torn between her fiancée and his best friend made me roll my eyes.
I also freaking hated Walsh. And then of course Ryan tries to hint at something with Cam and I do not freaking care. All three of these people were exhausting. Honestly this series started to remind me of the messiness of Omar Tyree’s books back in the day (yes I ate up Flyy Girl and the sequels). I used to eat that mess up when I was a kid, now at my big age I just want a straight romance where the two leads find each other and fall into a HEA for now. This mess was a barely HFN.
The dialogue was also not it and the flow was slow as anything. This book came with a bonus chapter that showed Cam’s POV and I didn’t even care at that point.
Anyway…..I don’t know if I can read another of Kennedy Ryan’s books. I know she’s super popular with Black readers and this book though I bought it this year, came out in 2014.
Just realized that I can use this for CBR17bingo, recommendation.
