Simone is a New Yorker who has just landed her dream job, as an editor. And now maybe she will have some time to devote to her own writing projects, too. Her husband, on the other hand, has different plans. He has joined an elite Army combat unit, and is looking forward to doing his share by shipping out to Afghanistan. But it’s all good, right, because she can work from home, at whatever Army base home ends up being. All right, let’s stop right here. They haven’t been married long, I’ll grant you, but didn’t they ever have a conversation as to where they see themselves ten years down the road? Apparently not!
Home turns out to be an Army base near Columbus, Georgia, a very far cry from New York. Her husband, Andrew, is away often on special training missions, and that’s even before he is shipped out. So Simone is alone childless in a conclave of young women and babies. So many babies. Some other wives are less than gung-ho about their husbands’ career paths as well, but most are not. So initially, it’s a fish out of water situation, but the women are for the most part willing to take this city girl under their wings, so to speak, and she becomes a little less prone to dismissing them.
I think that it was her decision to quit her job and get pregnant that lost me. Girl, you have been assimilated, don’t pretend that you haven’t. Plus not having any idea how their marriage worked. Gotta confess, no family experience with the military as a career choice here, so your mileage may vary.
