While alternative alphabet books are not new, The Dangerous Alphabet Book has a clever concept. We start off with the usual A is for something that is nice, normal, familiar. But in the middle of that an Alligator jumps in and hijacks the tale. By wanting to mix things up, make things a little edgy, and make it dangerous, they cause all sorts of mischief and mayhem to ensue. Of course, our first narrator fights this change, until they realize maybe it is a little fun to be a little dangerous.
DK Ryland’s book was read via an online reader copy. It is due in mid-November 2025. I would like to find a finished copy as I am curious at how large the actual size will be. It feels like it might be a longer, but also shorter, picture book. This would affect the ages who could and want to read. While, yes it is an alphabet book, the humor does go a bit to the older reader without being too over the top for a more traditional audience.
The art helps keep things light, but personal tastes made me want it to be slightly less amusing. Yet, at the same time, it works well. It is a case of your current mood at the time of reading, your own level of humor and tolerance to shenanigans, and if you (and/or your child) is a bit on the quirky side. But overall, things are nice, and the collection of art and text makes a clever alphabet book for readers of most ages.
