The Birds of Christmas by Olivia Armstrong and illustrated by Mira Miroslavova is a delightful spiritual story with a folktale approach. The colors and images are rich and move the story along. We follow the birds during the birth of the Christ child and the gifts they give to him. Yet, even though it Christian based (the birth of Christ) it is less religious and more wanting to give the spirit of the season.
I loved how Miroslavova’s illustrations are rich, pretty and show how each bird’s gift is special in its own unique way. But there is a small bird who cannot announce the birth like Raven, or make a feathered blanket, but they can help keep the fire burning and for that, is blessed with a special gift of their own. This Little Drummer Boy idea with birds is a nice addition to a holiday collection.
While the book is available at your local independent bookstore or library, I read it via an online reader. I would like to see a finished copy as I want to see the size of it. As it is, most ages I think could have it read to them and a few early readers could (with help) start reading it. It is a folk tale, with that tone to things. Nice, clever and cozy but has a bit of energy for the adult reader. However, a more active child might not be the right audience as the usual action elements are not there. Make it a new tradition for your Christmas Eve or during the holiday season, or really anytime as it is a story of being selfless and giving of yourself.
