I zipped through the Rivers of London series last summer and loved it. Then while browsing through the library I found the newest book 10! A very merry un-birthday to me!

Our old friend Peter Grant is no longer the wide-eyed little copper we first met. He’s grown into the Starling, an apprentice of the Nightingale but definitely a power in his own right. He’s still with his lovely wife, the river Beverly, and with the two year time jump since the last novel the twins are now energetic toddlers. Sounds like it’s time for a family trip to Scotland! Of course family also includes Peter’s mom and dad, as well as dad’s entire jazz band and their half-fae manager Zach. Thomas Nightingale has also come along with Peter’s cousin Abigail, she’s now 18ish and in need of a distraction after a traumatic event. Indigo the super spy fox would never let Abigail leave her behind when there’s a chance to trade spy secrets with the local foxes. And now I’m going to go lie down because the thought of trying to go on even a mundane vacation with this many people makes me tired. And you know nothing is ever mundane with this group!
If you’ve liked previous Rivers of London books then you will of course like this one as well. I found the Scottish setting very interesting and it brings in all sorts of new mystical beings. Peter is definitely not as reckless as he used to be but since he must have spent the time jump elbow deep in diapers it’s nice to see. The POV is traded back and forth between mostly Peter and some Abigail. I found her parts amusing but your mileage may vary- she’s definitely an impulsive, hormonal teen. I’m guessing we’ll see more from her and the foxes in the future.
