If you want to feel really bad about yourself, read Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness. Or, just as likely, if you want to feel great about yourself, read this graphic novel by Kristen Radtke. There are some contradictions, some places you will see yourself and see friends and/or family. It is slow reading, but busy.
The book’s theme is, as the title says, about loneliness. Radtke talks about how it has its has ups and downs, in an almost poetic fashion with both clinical information and familiar examples (though some examples might be a smidgen outdated to some younger readers, such as Mad Men, Brady Bunch or even the concept of Cowboys as the Lone Hero) to make the non academic able to access. There are several chapters that do not always feel like the flow into the next one smoothly, but also they do work. The colors and details are unusual and not always a pleasant view, but also they are clever and how they are presented shows different pieces, highlighting what the author is trying to cover.
A lot of the points, thoughts and situations are from the author’s own perspective, their own experiences and how they view the subject. It is a personal experience book for her and for you to take away what you put into it. Due to the theme of loneliness, there are mature elements included that make this not for a young or sensitive reader as it deals with mass shootings, experimentations on primates and other mental health issues.
