Lexi Bowen doesn’t trust easily which has served her well in her line of work. She’s been betrayed enough times to know she can count on herself and her crew, and that’s about it. The last thing she wants to do is work with Nilo Shoren, the teleported who stole her job the first time they met. But when Tavi and the rest of the crew go missing, the two will have to work together in order to rescue them and keep another war from breaking out. And Lexi finds that this time around she might actually be able to have what she wants if she’s willing to put her heart at risk.
Lexi is very much the sixth ranger of the Starlight’s Shadow crew. While she is a part of the crew, she often ventures out on her own. Which means we didn’t get to know her as well as Tavi or Kee since Lexi was only in part of the first book and not in the second book at all. So, I wasn’t quite as attached to her going into this book. She does make for an interesting character though, and it was interesting seeing how her story played out, especially since Lexi’s biggest obstacle is herself. This is both in working with Nilo to rescue the Starlight’s Shadow crew as well as in their developing relationship. At times her self-sabotaging did get frustrating, but I think it worked in the long run and was pretty realistic.
While there were some plot threads left dangling, this was a pretty good conclusion to the series, though there is definitely room for more adventures and romance in this universe. Tavi and Torran remain my favorite couple of the lot, but it was a great series and well worth the read. I’ll definitely be reading more of Jessie Mihalik. Three out of five stars.
