I love that the author’s dedication is to the person who eats raw carrots and gets the hiccups afterwards. I thought I was the only one that happened to. So, this proves books help represent all of us in our times of need! And, oh, yeah, it also really helps if you have the hiccups, too. This is a book that is fun, funny, clever, and deals with more than just the hiccups.
Seriously, A Cure for the Hiccups by Jennifer E. Smith and illustrated by Brandon James Scott (read via an online reader and due November 2025) is a sweet story about stopping, breathing and taking your time. Of course, our main character is a “On the go all the time” kind of girl. She must move, groove and just keep on keeping on. Therefore she has no time to stop and get rid of the hiccups! Of course, in typical kid fashion, she blows things out of proportion, leading to some interesting and amusing situations. And of course, once she takes her grandmother’s advice, something really amazing happens.
The artwork is good, cozy, and both have energy with a calming element. It fits the motif of breathing, by staying calm but also shows you how our gal is a fireball of movement and she is a lightning bolt ready to strike! It is a fun combination of feelings. Overall, I liked this book, maybe did not love it, but for something that is leaning towards “meditative acts” it was refreshing. You know the story, but the way Smith uses their text makes it not a pure copy.
