The Wild Robot on the Island by Peter Brown is currently available, yet I read via an online reader. This picture book is based off of the novel also by Brown. It takes the highlights of the first book (or I am assuming as I have not had the chance to read the series yet) and adapts them for the five and up crowd. Overall the book is fun and cute. It has moments that are not “edgy” but have a tint of sadness to them (when the duck flies off in fall and winter). I can see a sequel book that could cover the second book, but also I like how this one ends.
The story is simple with the Robot becoming the mother of an orphan duckling and the amazing adventures they have. They are edited into more digestible situations for the picture book crowd but feel as if they keep the essence of the novels. It was the illustrations that really grabbed my attention. They have an earthy tone that makes them feel more classical with a folktale overall tone. The density of the story and even illustrations gives this an older feeling, yet the younger crowd can enjoy it. I can also see an older reader (8 to a young 10) who has a bit of difficulty reading the full novels, reading this version. The only real issue might be as it is a picture book (and does look like a more artistic, larger one than is traditionally thought of as a picture book), it might turn older readers off.. Yet, it is the story their aged classmates and older students are reading, making it something that probably feels “okay” to be reading.
With the movie that came out (I believe in spring 2025), it would be a great companion for your younger child who is not ready for the deeper reading experience.
