The graphic novel, The Sleepover: A Graphic Novel by Michael Regina, reminds me of the RL Stine Goosebumps series or the Are You Afraid of the Dark? Series (or something similar as I know there are several thriller/horror reads out there). Things are spooky, but not necessarily over the top, but also things are not for the sensitive reader. It deals with grief (death of a caregiver who was like a grandmother to the family), friendship situations (being afraid, not talking when grieving, giving each other crud, telling ghost stories, watching scary movies, eating snacks and being there when the chips are down) and sibling issues (our two main siblings have that brother/sister dynamic where They Ain’t Heavy, They Are My Sibling attitude, but also Can’t Stand Each Other because the older is too cool and/or mean as he is upset about the death of the family friend).
The cover gives you an idea of the tone which is a bit lighter but still going to be spooky. The setting and items are modern (classic horror movies, video games) but also have an old school feeling. This combination makes the time frame as the 1980s or today. It has a classic horror and thriller mix to make a cryptid-monster adventure. And there are simpler and not too detailed illustrations to round things up. But of course, the needed information is there and ready to support the story as is required.
I would recommend the ages at least ages 10 and up, but strong 8 and up could do it as well. It might not be a great read aloud as it is a graphic novel, but a younger reader could read with someone. And while I was not wowed or blown away by this story, I enjoyed it. It reminds me of a few things I read as a preteen/young teen (that thriller/mystery) and it ends on a solid ending, but is a series, therefore, I might read more. For me, it is cozy, but action, read and for the aimed at ages it will be heart pumping.
