I didn’t like this as much as I liked House of Hollow, but there is no one writing fantastical horror atmosphere like Krystal Sutherland. Immaculate vibes. Cool and creepy worldbuilding. I am for sure reading any and all future books from her. This is also one of those cases where genre and marketing are getting in the way of people finding her books and liking them. She writes YA only because her protagonists are young. In almost every other respect, this is adult stuff, adult subject matter. This book does not shy away from its subjects.
We follow three young women in Oxford: Jude, a wealthy young woman cut off from her family because of a curse gone wrong that is ruining her life; Emer, an orphan who has no home and lives off her wits on the Oxford campus, and who has a mysterious past involving demons; and Zara, who is determined to resurrect her dead sister, who was murdered the year before. They are all connected, and once they find each other, the plot really gets moving and the book is very hard to put down.
This book is also pretty gay! And there are lots and lots and lots of grey areas that it explores. If you like witchy vibes and dark fantasy and have a strong stomach (gore, other gross stuff) you should definitely give this one a go. And House of Hollow, which was even better.
CBRBINGO: ‘I’ (self-explanatory)
