Cbr17bingo G (G is for Ghost)
When I find a book from Papercutz I usually have an extreme I really like this or I really don’t. Now, granted The Ghost of Wreckers Cove by Angelica Del Campo, Christian Argiz and Liniers (illustrator) had a few bumps as I am an adult reader who has to remember sometimes you need to suspend your “reality need” for the sake of a good story.
I was debating if I wanted to read this graphic novel as it looked nice, but that it might be overly slow. It was an online reader copy and I can sometimes get through a physical book if it has a slower pacing, but online that isn’t always as easy for me to read. Thankfully, while it does keep a slower pacing, it keeps moving forward even if it feels like there is a slight lull in things.
What the book turned out to be is a fun sister-buddy story that deals with grief, family, love, mystery and much more. IT is clever and simple, without being overly simplistic This tale is reminiscent of classical stories with a touch of modernism (mostly the items like cell phones). And it is spooky without being too scary. However, they do find the skeleton of the ghost girl and you see Ida’s (the ghost/former lighthouse keeper) foot caught on the ship, alluding to drowning. Also, there are several extras that talk about lighthouses, pirates, and female lighthouse keepers to name a few things. As I said above, It had a few “bumps” but the strong 8 to 12 will say it is a rating of 5 (why I’m giving it a 4).
This four also comes from the fact I was not crazy about the illustrations. Now, I liked them, but I would have preferred a bit more color to things. However, that does color the mystery elements and the fact that the story is partly set in a time of manned lighthouses and more regular bouts with land pirates.
