I was looking for a light read between finishing Martyr! and resuming a Robin Hobb book, and this fit the bill. It’s a sweet, sapphic romance between Noah and Sage, two rival artists. They had met in college but hadn’t interacted in several years, though they were well aware of what each was doing on the comic scene, and then Noah gets hired by the company Sage works at. They are going to have to work together as the head artists on a comic rebranding, though neither has particularly warm feelings toward the other, and of course they also have some misconceptions about each other.
The novel is dual POV, and I enjoyed both characters’ perspectives, though I liked Noah a bit more, probably because I have more similarities to her. She and Sage are both snarky towards each other but also supportive, and as they became closer, they had to figure out how to remain supportive while also being in very competitive spaces. I also loved the setting. I haven’t read many books set in this kind of art world, and it was a pleasure to get snippets of information about the comics that Noah and Sage are working on, in both their professional and personal lives. Their co-workers made for interesting, supportive side characters, though I wish that we’d gotten a little more time with Noah’s roommate and best friend Amaya. Both main characters also have some tension in their families in various ways and were able to grow in how they handled this.
There was a smattering of typos, and I would consider the pacing somewhat uneven. However, I really enjoyed this cozy read. I recommend it for romance fans, especially if you’re looking to diversify your reading.
