To be honest, I do not remember if I requested the reader’s copy of Little Rebels by Yuyi Morales or if it was just sent to me, but either way I got a lovely surprise when it arrived at my work via the USPS mail. It is due in early September 2025, therefore you’ll have plenty of time to put in your preorder request at your local independent bookstore.
I cannot say a lot about the story as it felt personal. You read what you read and take away what you take away. You are not going to necessarily take away what I did or someone else did. The publisher’s description is: “Three young rebels build bonds of trust with one another and themselves, which are tested when they find their river dried up and an animal friend injured.” I can say it is about environmentalism and friendship and what one person can do to make things better. And one person may be a Little Rebel, but they can do big things. Especially when all the little and big rebels get together to do something.
What I can talk about is the illustrations. I do dislike saying this, but I found them to be off putting as they are definitely not my style. I am assuming I know why they did this particular style (to be edgy and different and bring out the Earthy elements of the story with the native presenting cast), but for me, I was hoping for something maybe more traditional looking. With that said, I of course appreciate the time and effort that went into creating them. They have a unique style that makes them stand out from similar books and gives the tone of things. While I am not sure exactly what ages would be best, as it is an all ages type of story, not all ages are ready for it. Therefore, know your reader and/or listener and go from there.
