Don’t judge a book by its cover does not apply to Cabin Head and Tree Head, Book #1 by Scott Campbell. You see this cover and you know exactly what you will be getting into. It is odd, not necessarily a good quirky, and really off beat. And if that is your thing, then go for it.
Even though everyone at work seemed to be reading and enjoying it a lot, I kept passing it by. The whole look turned me off to wanting to read. But by the third staff recommendation I read I realized I better try it. I eventually located a physical reader copy (though I’m sure there were few online copies, too) and had until late September/early October 2025 to read it, so I could take my time (even though it was short) if I needed. One weekend it was hot and I was cranky and I wanted to read but nothing too heavy. Therefore, I found the shortest books I could find so my brain wouldn’t heat up and got to see why everyone was talking about and liking Campbell’s book.
When you ask me why they liked it, I am going to say I’m not sure as it did not do anything for me. However, when the right reader finds this Frog and Toad meets Beavis and Butthead meets oddly specifically named characters, they will be over the moon, under the river and through the woods happy.
When I’m not a fan of a book I do try to find something good about it. This time I will say that the humor will appeal to probably the 7 to 10 reader, and though at least two of the three reviews were female staff members, my brain figures that more boys might like it than girls. With that said, I know several off beat girls and plan on giving my copy to another coworker’s daughter as I think she would be perfect for it.
