Young Men in Love: New Romance by Anthony Oliveira, Joe Glass, Matt Miner (these two are highlighted as they are the ones in the email that included an online reader link), Luciano Vecchio, Bradley Clayton, Ilias Kyriazis, David Brame, Josh Cornillon and various others, came to me via an email from A Wave Blue World and Diamond Book Distributors. The email itself (which I assume was sent via a mailing list) was from Jesse who has sent other emails for the books they rep. And there are a good publisher/book rep as I’ve found a few from them that I have enjoyed.
And Young Men did not disappoint. There are several great short stories about love and the ups and downs, the good, the bad, the (literal) demons and the love affairs people can find themselves exploring. It has fantasy and science fiction elements therefore it can be a bit “edgy” for the sensitive reader. It also includes a story about a character having cancer, several battle/war scenes and at least one story with obvious religious themes. This “something for everyone” allows for multiple types of readers, but honestly I think you can get something from them all..
Yes, it has Gay Romance as the main theme, but you can be a lover of romance stories, or you can not be a lover of romance but like stories about adventures, or you can like D&D like stories, or stories about star-crossed characters, or you can enjoy a good polyamorous relationship or you can read about demons and jealous exes or how one serves their faith and their hearts. In other words, I even found things to get behind even though I am not a romance first reader, so you can too!
And this includes the illustrations. Different authors and illustrators grace the pages of this short story graphic novel collection. There are some sweet realistic images and some funky slightly more cartoon/comic looking ones as well. Some of the images are mature (but tasteful as the story of David and his lover are shown in the nude, but strategically covered by panels or details, yet there is no question about what is happening/happened and your imagination can fill in the blanks). Both art and text do make this for at least ages 14 and up, with adults as the main targeted age group.
I believe this is a companion to Young Men in Love: A Queer Romance Anthology (from 2022) and not a reissue, though authors and illustrators are repeated. (Due early/mid June 2025).
