I am sorry Casey Lyall and Nici Gregory but your story, Vampire Jam Sandwich (which I read via an online reader copy and is due July 2025) did not hit the spot for me. Now I appreciate the ingredients you put into the illustrations, such as the red colors, the pointy teeth sandwich runny and running around (even if it is a bit messy and I am feeling the sticky getting all over) and the flapping capes that hide the surprise ending. Which was written in the humorous text that is prominently displayed on the other pages as well.
I mean, Terrance probably was a nice person… ah…vampire, but he um, well didn’t have a lot of bite to him as a character. Again, that’s just for me. But I know a lot of kids (and even adults who think like kids) who will eat this story up. While I do like jams and jelly’s, strawberry jam doesn’t cut the mustard for me (and I’m surprised that our character likes it … But as you said, the vampire might have thought it was something ….. Else. And just got a nice surprise).
There is a lot of potential for the book, I see nominations for awards, kids howling to read it again and again. I know they will snack it up and gobble it down wanting seconds, even thirds. There is the potential for the non-able to read reader to make up their own words, kids who like to share their reading treats can be read too, and the older reader can sink their teeth into reading solo. I hope that others don’t find this crummy and you have many minions, but I just was not the right reader for Vampire Jam Sandwich. (You wouldn’t know about a werewolf who likes hamburgers would you?)
