The Changeling: Volume 2 by Tina N. Lugo is obviously the second in The Changeling series. And therefore, I recommend reading the first book first. And if you can find all three of the currently available titles, you should read them together, as while I was reading this manga series, I was hoping that it is only a trilogy. It is not that I did not like it (I would not have read two volumes if it was horrible), it is just that the story, while interesting and exciting, needs a sooner than later wrap up. It can be slow, there is a lot of stuff going on and it needs to be brought together.
As it is a fantasy graphic novel, there is death and violence. Illustrators are black and white so the blood and injuries are not as intense as they could be, but the female nudity has no questions on biological genders. However, due to the dual nature of their birth (born of human mother and a demon other parent), how they were conceived (seemingly magical), and what she represents (an omen of evil) and the character defying Western stereotypes and the focuses on queerness and Taíno representation (as the author’s publisher biography mentions), the character, Luth, might be physically female, even using “she” to describe themselves, her actual self is of a dualness.
The overall consensus is that I like Lugo’s collection of stories, but I do need more all at once. They are short, therefore, are good for a quick read. They have mystery and intrigue (what is the Dark Star? What will happen between Luth and her brother? Why was the wisp nice to Luth?). And much more. And on that note, I’m off to find the third installment.
