Well sometimes you can’t go home again. Trying to re-read the second book in The Beach House series was a mess. This took me so many days to get through. I know it came out almost what, 20 years ago, and I can say it does not hold up at all. The book was just a grind to get through. I also now hate the name Little Lovie. Just call the child a different name people. There is no conflict in this book at all. The first book had a lot of family tension that was left unresolved. And this one just goes on and on and then we end. I kept waiting for something to just happen, but everything kind of resolves itself in mere chapters.
“Swimming Lessons” follows Toy (we were introduced to her in the last book). She now works at the local aquarium and is raising her daughter, Little Lovie. She ends up finding a large and injured turtle on the beach and gets the aquarium to host it while she gets it healthy again. She tentatively starts a romance with the local aquarium supervisor, Ethan. Of course though that is halted in the tracks when her daughter’s father comes back in the picture.
I think most readers of this series wanted this since so many fell for Toy and her whole story. I just was glad to be done with this one in the end. And we of course have parts of the book following Cara and Brett and I forgot how much I loathe romance stories when a character cannot get pregnant. I feel sad all over again because I read the rest of the series, I know of course what does happen. I wonder if it would have been better to stop after book #1 so you can make up your own happy ending for some of these characters.
