A really good friend of mine that primarily reads horror said that this book really is a great take on grief based horror fiction and I agree. Catriona Ward has explored this in some of her other works, but this one was well done. I think that it just flowed perfectly. You have the sadness for the main character, Stella, but at times man, I was mad. As things started to slot into place in her mind with what happened 8 years ago that left her frozen in grief I was wondering where Ward was going with things. But I thought this story ends beautifully and it may make some people wish for their mothers.
“Night and Day is Misery” follows Stella. Stella is determined to spend time in the last place her husband and their 2 year old son spent time in, Room 17 at a Motel in Misery, Missouri. Stella has felt trapped for 8 years, but now has a plan that she will ensure she completes.
I thought that this one does a lot of real life horror for me. No spoilers, but I always think it’s so funny when men got upset that a lot of women chose the bear versus the man. This book right here had me going, so about that bear. I think that the slow waking up of Stella to what her life really was like 8 years ago, her partial estrangement from everyone was painful to read. I wanted a few more pages about what she said to [redacted].
