I cannot say that Max, a Little Axolotl #1 (An Original Graphic Novel) is the best book I have ever read. I cannot even say it was a great book. Joey Spiotto made a cute story about coming out of your comfort zone, friendship and even a little bit about axolotls. The thing is, as an adult, I can like and appreciate the book, but it was slightly too simple for my personal tastes. Therefore, at least five and up would be a good read-to and solo read (or with help). As it was read via an online reader copy the images were not complete, but what I did see was easy and colorful. It was not WOW but for the right reader it will be a huge hit. I will be reading any sequels and more by Spiotto.
Due September 2025, you will have to wait (or find an online reader) but that is not a huge issue, as they have both adult and children reads. And there are plenty of books about Axolotls out there such as Axolotl and Axolittle by Jess Hitchman and Sarah Rebar. Aimed at the at least 3-4 to about seven crowd, this picture book was read via an online reader and is due July 2025. We have two opposite siblings who, like siblings will, argue. But of course, like siblings also do, they can make up and find some common ground. We see how different personalities can come together, we see how they both have their own personal strengths and weaknesses and this is done with very simple and bright illustrations. In a slightly different twist, Axolotl is the female character who is loud and boisterous, whereas Axolittle is the male character and is shyer and quieter, and glasses-wearing.
These two books are obviously fiction but with Max we do learn some facts about the critters. They are both fun and I can see your child wanting to read them (or having them read to them) multiple times. So, sorry about that….
