I Hear the Snow, I Smell the Sea is a lovely, poetic text and soft classical story that also has several modern takes. Author Janice Milusich’s text and Chris Raschka styled illustrations make up this familiar season’s story (we have a child who follows the seasons in the usual ways by talking about the sun, how things feel, colors and more) but this time there is a wonderful twist of having a visually impaired narrator.
This narrator must experience these things differently, therefore seems to not take for granted the beauty of what she can smell, touch, hear and taste. The wonderment that she feels around her and that excitement it creates, she shares with her mother. This makes everything have a hopeful tone. The concept is relatable to all and most ages can appreciate it. Best for at least five and up, adults will enjoy it as well. It works well for a read aloud and a one-on-one read. The early reader (with or without help) can also take their time and read each section at their own pace.
Read via an online reader copy, the final copy is due September 2025. This is the kind of book you can give as gifts (birthdays, new baby showers, and even to adults) or purchase multiple copies for yourself. You will want to give copies to every child you know. A nice element of things is that it might have a female protagonist, it is something everyone can find something in it for them to like.
