This one was intense. I probably should have paid more attention to the terrifying cover illustration. Or maybe not chose to read a gory horror novel while waiting for an inspection at the mechanic. I thought I was going to throw up all over the waiting room.

Julie Crews (yes I am humming the Twin Peaks theme song thank you) has been doing the most gruesome, dead end magical jobs in New York City. Now that she’s in her thirties she’s tired of just scraping by. She needs a miracle. And if you’re looking for a miracle, who better to ask than an angel? Make sure it is a real angel first though.
If you can make it through the first scene where Julie attends a bachelorette party that involves way more bodily fluids (and body parts) than you might expect, then you might be okay with this book. It is descriptively gory and I have to admit it was too much for me although I made it to the end. I loved the characters of Julie, Sarah, St. Joan, and Dead Air and their found family friendship. The growing relationship between Julie and Sarah is so sweet. The plot was interesting and I wanted to know what was going to happen. I found it amusing that magical New York was not hidden at all, just your average New Yorker would never take notice of a blood covered woman riding the subway. There were a lot of extremely descriptive descriptions I had to skim on past though. It was a lot.
If you enjoy horror and are fine with gore, this book was fantastic. It’s supposed to be a duology so I might check out the second just to see how the characters are doing. Until then I think I’d better go wash my brain out with some fluffy Booktok abomination.
