Unlike Murray in Murray’s Howl-o-ween: A Halloween Picture Book by E. G. Keller I love the country (though “after cow” isn’t my fave scent). Murray is a dog that likes the sounds and smells of home. He’s less than impressed with the odd smells, the weird decorations and the company (a cat). But eventually, he will learn about the wonders of something called Halloween and the treats are much sweeter than the tricks of earlier.
Due in July 2025, it will be out in time for your own little goblins and spooks. You can be a fan of dogs, cats and Halloween or not, but you will become a fan of the hijinks and silliness. Even this ol’ stick in the mud found herself giggling a time or two. Sure, things were not perfect for me (I would have preferred Murry didn’t chew up a few of the decorations and the pumpkins) but overall it works well. Best for the Halloween season, I would read this to all ages year around. It deals with the idea of change as much as the holiday celebration.
I was unable to locate an online reader copy of the companion book, Murray Christmas (The Perfect Christmas Book for Children), (with the paperback version having tear-out gift tags) like I did with Murray’s Howl-o-ween, but I could reread A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo that Keller also illustrated. And speaking of illustrations, the ones in Murray have a fun, colorful quality to them. Details are not lacking but are also not crowded. They are both cozy and have a bit of action to them. You will love watching the fluffy pup as he faces his fears (with the help of a few special friends) with your own cuddle buddy/buddies.
