If I had a nickel for every book I’ve read recently that also has Anya Taylor-Joy starring in an upcoming adaptation, I’d have two nickels which is not a lot but it’s still weird that it happened twice.

Lucky Armstrong is having both the best and worst day of her life. She and her boyfriend Cary have pulled off a scam that will allow them to finally run off to live the life of luxury in the Caribbean that they’ve been working towards. Except Cary has disappeared and their faces are all over the news. The only thing Lucky has is a lotto ticket that she purchased on a nostalgic whim that just happens to be a multi-million dollar jackpot winner. If she tries to cash it in she’ll be arrested. What’s a poor little grifter with no real friends or family to do?
We flip back and forth between two storylines, Lucky in the present and Lucky as a child and up to what happened with Cary. She’s being forced to deal with her past while trying to find safety (and a way to cash that lotto ticket!). She certainly wasn’t the bold Robin Hood figure stealing from the rich that she told herself she was. Lucky is also way more naïve as a character than I would think a trust no one tricky scammer would be, but to paraphrase another character ‘the heart wants what it wants’. Things get a little series of amazing coincidences at the end working everything out but it was still a satisfying if surprisingly short story. You could easily zip through this in an afternoon.
As for that upcoming Apple TV+ series, I just found out that Timothy Olyphant has also been cast in it and I knew that you would all want to know this extremely important information. Sorry for burying the lede like that.
