Little Moments in a Big Universe is a romantic story about bravery, kindness, even environmentally friendly. There are lush, rich, deep, amazing, unique illustrations which capture each moment and allow it to explode to life. The theme is familiar, but the presentation makes for an experience unlike anything else you might have read before.
The author and illustrator Todd Stewart (due mid October 2025; read via an online reader) takes several characters and an explorer in a spaceship through the universe. When they crash into an unknown world, there is a strange new world to explore. It is an odd one, an unusual one, an unfamiliar one. Yet, the explorer realizes they are the real aliens in this situation. And yet, we are all connected in different and wonderful ways.
The publisher’s description says that things are set in “Lyrical text and out-of-this-world screen-printed and digital artwork” and we are invited to explore the universe. The ages that could explore should be at least five and up, but the way things are given do lend themselves to an older listener and reader. I think a one on one read would work best, but it probably could be a group read as well. However, since the illustrations are the story as much as the text, they are a character within themselves, I recommend being able to share the book in an intimate setting.
Stewart’s work is one that I am not sure I like. I don’t dislike it, but the oddness of things makes it a strong case of whether you like it or you don’t. You probably would appreciate the time, effort and work that went into it, like I do, but it is such an experience that a first read is not going to give you everything you need, or at least it didn’t for me. Multiple readings is highly recommended.
