Picture books are a great way to read a book without having to read a full novel. You can get a good, strong story, but done quickly enough to get your book fix without a lot of effort. Now that is not to say they are bad, or not “real books” or even not in depth. In fact, just the opposite is true. Some of my favorite books have been picture books. I still talk about Strega Nona, The Clown of God, Zoom and Rezoom, and so many more. And I might just be talking about At the Rescue Cat Café for some time to come And not just because Anna Humphrey and illustrator Kari Rust’s book is not due until early August 2025 and I’ll be talking it up until then.
But I will be pushing it until then and afterwards because this is a funny book about purrsonalities and personalities and how they fit together when a human finds the right cat (or the right cat finds the right human). It is about how you can adopt a cat and get a latte and snack. It is about a little child who has a unique look on life and takes their time finding the critter for them.
Everything about this book is cute and fairly simple, but not simplistic. It is cozy and great for a solo read. One could do it as a group read aloud, but as I read it via an online reader I am not sure how large the physical book is and it feels like it might be on the smaller size. One of the nice parts of the book is that you do not have to like cats to enjoy it. And the other nice thing about things is that the cast of characters are wonderfully diverse.
