I subscribe to a used book service where you tell the seller a bit about you, and then they send you 1-4 books per month that match your style(s). Since my dark, sad heart loves classic noir, they sent me Charlie Huston’s Already Dead. It’s book one in the Joe Pitt series.
Joe Pitt died a long time ago. Sort of. He’s a vampyre (my preferred spelling, by the way) wandering in Manhattan. There’s lots of vampyres in Manhattan. Not only that, but they’ve set up factions throughout Manhattan and other parts of New York City. It’s the perfect setup for a noir. Pitt has relationships with a few of the factions, but he’s gone Rogue – he’s a dead man without a country. He can’t quite follow the leader; in that way, he’s every noir protagonist you’ve ever met. Without backup, he is always on the brink of true death. He does favors for factions to avoid annihilation, but their patience with Pitt is wearing thin. His current mission? Find a missing rich girl who slums it with NYC squatters.
The conceit and writing work so well for me. Pitt is world-weary to the max – after all, he is dead! He can take more punishment than your typical noir fixer and doesn’t mind doing it. Even though it hurts. BECAUSE it hurts? Hmm. Even though he’s a vampire, he’s got enough humanity to make you root for him and hope his shifting alliances hold out long enough to complete the mission.
Dark, sexy, sometimes funny, sometimes regressive. I’ll keep reading.
