Welcome to the Maynard by James Robinson and J. Bone (illustrations by) is due mid-to-late July 2025. This is the least interesting thing about the book and I find publication dates interesting. The real interesting parts are the story itself. The publisher says it is for ages 12 to 17 (very arbitrary I felt), but I could see going slightly younger as well. However, it does have fantasy action and I cannot say “violence” but it is not not violence, you should know your reader.
The story is about a young woman, Pip, who starts a new job as a bellhop in a grand, exclusive hotel. In fact, it is so grand and exclusive that few have even seen it, let alone stayed. You see, it is a hotel for wizards, sorcerers, and other magical beings and if you’re not on the “list” you are really not on the list. As we go along we learn there are different types of magic and people who can see and participate in it. Pip is not sure how her father was, but knows her mother was half, therefore Pip and most who work at The Maynard are “half” magic. The adventures include a thief who is stilling seemingly useless trinkets, the staff drama and a few secrets around people. And as we go along, the Who Done It mystery unfolds.
Some of the themes and action are mature, but it has a young voice. It reminded me of the Goldie Vance series by Hope Larson, yet more humorous with Pip in a more contemporary setting and themes. Yet, Goldie did have a few modern elements to the characters. The humorous illustrations do tone down the more serious moments. They are colorful and detailed. There are two worlds our protagonist lives in (the real world, which is dark, falling apart, and the magical worlds) and they are perfectly separated on the pages.
Overall, I liked this graphic novel. I was able to make a list of the suspects and narrowed it down. I figured out the identity of the thief. And had a few other plot points I was able to predict. It is predictable for the adult reader, but if you’re not a big mystery person, the results are a pleasant journey to take. I probably will not purchase a copy when it comes out, as the online readers copy read included the story and the extras at the end.
