If The Librarians television series met the movie The Night at the Museum you would have The Night Librarian: A Graphic Novel by Christopher Lincoln. Realism, fantasy and literature literally come to life on the pages of this middle grade graphic novel.
While I liked and enjoyed it, I was not “wowed.” Things are familiar (sibling issues, issues with absent parents, really expensive and rare editions of Dracula), and it is just a fun story about stories, siblings, family, communication, being appreciated. We have read this before. The sibling dynamic is a bit reversed (the sister is the pushy, adventurous one; the brother the worrying kind) and are twins, but siblings will sible… In the end, the adult me was thinking “I needed more meat and potatoes for things.” The kid me said, “This is practically perfect and I like it a lot” (which is funny as I was never a fantasy fan as a kid, but if it was realistic as well and relatable, then I was into it).
The illustrations are nice, but here is where I would mostly have liked a little more to things. The colors are decent, the details medium, but there are some “hidden jokes” that make up for the potential “missing” (missing only to me, most people will get a big kick out of them). Still, details are important and I wanted a few more. I am not sure I would go onto other books if this is a series (which how it ends does hint as such), but I know it will grab your aged 10 and up reader (and the adult who enjoys a good tale about classic stories).
