How many Hawk Tuah jokes do I get to make for this reading challenge?
Anyway, Book 13 of the Animorphs is narrated by Tobias, our boy who accidentally stayed in his hawk morph too long, and is now permanently stuck in a hawk’s body. It has its ups and downs, and lately he’s really been missing his human form, and feeling like he is a useless member of the Animorphs because he can’t morph. He meets a pair of Hork-Bajir, dinosaur-like aliens who make up the “brute squad” under control of the Yeerks. But these two have gotten themselves free of the Yeerks and are on the run. The Animorphs work together to find the Hork-Bajir a hideout in the mountains.
This was a fun volume. We were visited by the Ellimist again, a tricky bitch who isn’t supposed to futz with the future but REALLY likes to in vague annoying ways. He strikes up a deal with Tobias, and Tobias assumes this deal is that he will be human again. But the Ellimist actually gives him the ability to morph. Better than nothing, but Tobias is frustrated. But THEN the Ellimist takes him back in time to meet HIMSELF in boy form…. so by the end of the book, he can morph into his human body for a short time, which will be useful when him and Rachel want to kissy kissy.
Not a lot of 90s references in this one! A fun gore moment though – the Hork Bajir are tough, and can heal fast – so to prove they aren’t under Yeerk control, one rips open his skull to show the animorphs his BRAIN! Nice.
