I started a review once that said that I like sibling books and sister books in particular. Story Spinners: A Sisterly Tale of Danger, a Princess, and Her Crew of Lady Pirates written and illustrated by Cassandra Federman is one of those books. Currently available, this is a cute story about modern day sisters, with one having some old school ideas that get messy when the sisters unite to tell their “other sister” a bedtime story.
Of course, there is more than that. The oldest and middle sister are opposites. One neat, likes romances and fairy tales, the other comics and pirate stuffed toys and is messy. They fight all the time, but once upon a time they had sometimes gotten along. That was until The Other Sister (the youngest, the baby) was moved into their room. The three coinhabit in messy noisy not so bliss. And it all leads to two tired older sisters and a major fight that sees the electronics gone until they get along.
And then there are the fun illustrations that are colorful, simple and show the characteristics of the three siblings (even a baby as she has great puppy eyes, awesome drool and even a good (sneaky) smile). The narrator has some clever one-liners as do the two older girls as they try and co-tell a fairytale that follows the formula. But of course, since they are opposites, a Pretty Princess waiting to be rescued to find her true love prince does not fit with the second author who wants danger, pirates and ax-chopping.
Read via an online reader copy, this book is fun, modern elements and clever (especially the ending).
